Valves are devices that work to control, regulate or direct flow within a system or process. They are essential components in piping systems across various industries, from water treatment and oil & gas to food processing and pharmaceuticals.
Valves provide several functions, including: starting or stopping flow based on the valve state, regulating flow and pressure within a piping system, controlling the direction of flow within a piping system, throttling flow rates within a piping system, and improving safety through relieving pressure or vacuum in a piping system. These functionalities make valves indispensable in ensuring operational safety and efficiency.
Multi-turn valves operate similarly to a screw mechanism. You crank the handle and the plug, plate, membrane, or other controlling obstruction moves into the path of the pipe blocking access. This method allows for gradual control over the flow and is commonly used in gate and globe valves.
Quarter turn valves offer rapid operation. Quarter-turn valves offer a full range of motion in a 90-degree turn of the handle. These are ideal for applications where quick shut-off is required without precise flow regulation. Ball valves and butterfly valves typically fall into this category.
Typically adjusted by hand, these valves use handwheels, hand levels, gear wheels, or chains to actuate. They are cost-effective and simple but require human intervention for operation.
Actuated Valves: Often connected to electric motors, air or pneumatic systems, hydraulic systems, or solenoids, these valves allow remote control and automation for high-precision or large-scale applications.
Automatic Valves: Some valves activate when a specific flow condition is met. Examples include check valves closing during backflow or pressure release valves activating when an over-pressure condition is detected.
Valves can be categorized based on how their closure components move relative to the valve seat:
a. Globe Type: The closure component moves along the centerline of the valve seat (commonly seen in globe valves).
b. Gate Type: The closure component moves in a direction perpendicular to the centerline of the valve seat (such as in gate valves).
c. Plug and Ball Type: The closure component is a plug or ball that rotates around its own axis (such as in plug valves and ball valves).
d. Swing Type: The closure component rotates around an axis outside the valve seat (such as in swing check valves).
e. Butterfly Type: The closure component is a disk that rotates around an axis inside or outside the valve seat (such as in butterfly valves).
f. Sliding Type: The closure component slides in a direction perpendicular to the passage (such as in slide valves).
Valves are also classified based on their functional roles:
a) Shutoff – Used to cut off (or connect) the medium in the pipeline. Examples include gate valves, globe valves, ball valves, plug valves, butterfly valves, etc.
b) Check – Used to prevent the backflow of the medium. Example: check valve.
c) Regulating – Used to regulate the pressure and flow of the medium in the pipeline. Examples include regulating valves, pressure relief valves, throttling valves, butterfly valves, V-port ball valves, etc.
d) Distribution – Used to change the flow direction of the medium in the pipeline and distribute the medium. Examples include distribution valves, three-way or four-way plug valves, three-way ball valves, etc.
e) Safety – Used for pressure safety protection, such as safety valves, overflow valves, etc.
f) Other Uses – Examples include steam traps, drain valves, vent valves, breathing valves, slag discharge valves, etc.
Screwed or Threaded: Often used in instrument connections or sample points, suitable for low-pressure applications.
Flanged: The most common ends for piping use, offering strong sealing capabilities.
Butt Welded: Typically used in high-pressure or high-temperature operations, providing permanent joints.
Socket Welded: Commonly used on small bore piping where threaded connections are not permitted.
Wafer and Lug: Compact designs often used for compact valves installed in systems with limited space.
