A foot valve is a kind of check valve that sits at the bottom of a suction line in water pumps. Its main job is to let fluid flow one way—into the pump—and stop it from sneaking back out when the pump shuts off. This keeps the suction line full and ready for the next go, which is super important for keeping things running smoothly.
Foot valves have a few cool parts: valve body, disc (or flap), seat, spring, and strainer screen.
The valve body is often made from stuff like cast iron, cast steel, stainless steel, or plastic to fit different jobs and liquids. The disc steers the liquid’s direction and seals tight. The seat teams up with the disc to block backflow.
The spring gives a quick push to shut the disc when liquid stops or tries to flow backward. A strainer or filter screen at the inlet keeps junk from messing up the system’s insides.
When the pump kicks on, the liquid’s pressure beats the spring’s pull, lifting the disc to let fluid into the pipeline. As long as there’s push from below, the valve stays open.
But when the pump stops or if gravity or siphoning tries to pull liquid back, the spring snaps the disc shut against the seat. This stops any backward flow into the tank or reservoir.
This one-way action keeps system pressure steady and avoids problems like airlocks or cavitation from empty suction lines.
Lift-type foot valves have a disc that slides up and down a guide rod in the valve body. This setup seals awesome but might slow the flow a bit. It’s great for clean liquids with hardly any dirt or bits.
Swing-type foot valves use a hinged disc that swings open when liquid flows forward and shuts when it reverses. These valves let more liquid through with less resistance. They’re perfect for big pipelines where there’s room for easy setup and care.
Plastic foot valves are made from stuff like PVC, PP, or PE. They’re light, don’t rust, and are cheap for low-pressure jobs. They’re awesome for chemical dosing or clean water systems with strict hygiene needs but can’t handle super hot temps.
Stainless steel foot valves fight rust and high heat while being super tough. They’re used in places like petrochemical plants, power stations, food factories, and drug-making facilities where strength in tough conditions is a must.
In water pump suction lines, a foot valve keeps pipes filled with liquid even when pumps are off. This stops air from sneaking in and causing cavitation damage when the pump starts up.
In tanks or reservoirs linked to transfer pipelines, foot valves stop stored liquids from flowing back into tanks after pumping stops. This keeps pipelines clean and lowers contamination risks from backward mixing.
In wastewater plants, foot valves help control fluid levels during suction by stopping untreated sewage from flowing back into pits or basins after each cycle.
Foot valves should go vertically at pipe ends dunked in tanks or wells. Make sure they’re set so liquid flows up through them into pipelines without any block.
Before setting up, flush pipes well to clear out junk that could clog the valve later. Use the right connections, like flanged joints or threaded fittings, based on size and material to ensure no leaks.
Check regularly to make sure the disc moves freely without getting stuck from dirt buildup. Look at filter screens often; clean them if they’re clogged; swap out damaged ones quick.
Check seals now and then for wear; replace gaskets if you spot leaks during use. If the design allows, grease moving parts with stuff the maker suggests.
