A globe valve is a type of valve primarily used to regulate, start, or stop the flow of fluid in a pipeline. It features a movable disc and a stationary ring seat within its spherical-shaped body, which gives it the name "globe valve." This design is particularly effective for throttling applications and allows precise control over flow rates.
A globe valve has these main parts:
· Stem: This piece links the handle or motor to the disc. It slides up or down to move the disc.
· Bonnet: A lid that covers and guards inner parts like the stem and seals.
· Disc: Sometimes called the plug, it adjusts flow by shifting closer to or farther from the seat.
· Valve Body: The outer shell that holds all the insides and connects to the pipe.
These parts work together to control liquid flow and keep it sealed tight.
To work the valve, you turn the stem with a handle or motor. This makes the stem move. It lifts or lowers the disc compared to the seat. When the disc is fully up, liquid flows freely. As it goes down, flow slows. It stops completely when the disc sits tight on the seat.
Globe valves are awesome at fine-tuning flow. They let workers adjust liquid amounts easily. This makes them perfect for setups needing small changes in flow.
When shut, globe valves seal tightly. This is key for blocking off pipe sections during fixes or urgent stops.
Their design makes it simple to reach inner parts like the bonnet, stem, and disc. This makes checking and fixing easy. It cuts down on time the system is off.
The seat and disc can be swapped out. This keeps the valve working well for a long time without needing a whole new one.
· Greater Actuation Force Required: Moving the stem up and down takes more effort than turning valves like ball valves. In high-pressure spots, a motor might be needed to help.
· Slower Operation: Globe valves need several turns to open or close. This makes them less good for jobs needing quick switches.
1. T- or Z-Shaped Design: This common style makes liquid turn twice. It’s great for precise control but loses more pressure.
2. Angle Design: With a 90-degree bend, this cuts down on swirling compared to T-shaped ones.
3. Y-Shaped Design: This gives a straighter path than T-shaped designs. It reduces pressure loss while still controlling flow well.
1. Plug Disc: Solid, pointed discs are tough. They seal tightly for exact control.
2. Composition Disc: Has soft bits like rubber for better sealing against dirt.
3. Ball Disc: Uses round parts for smooth work and fast shutoff.
By knowing how they work, their perks, limits, uses, and styles, globe valves stay super important in today’s liquid control systems.
Globe valves and gate valves are both multi-turn valves. But they do different things. Gate valves are for on/off jobs. They have little pressure loss because liquid flows straight through (L/D ratio ~8). Globe valves are better for adjusting flow. They lose more pressure because liquid turns a lot inside.
High-pressure globe valves are built tough. They use materials like stainless steel or ductile iron to handle big pressures. They have thicker walls and stronger seals for long-lasting work in tough spots.
Electric globe valves have perks over manual ones. They let you control them from far away. They fit into smart systems. This makes exact control easy without needing to be there. They’re great for hard-to-reach or risky spots.
