Design: The wafer type butterfly valves are designed to be sandwiched in between two pipe flanges, with thin bodies without mounting lugs or flange holes on it.
Advantages: These valves are light and slim, easy to operate even in small spaces. Their simple design and less material use make them cost - effective. Maintenance is also relatively easy, usually just simple removal for replacement.
Disadvantages: Supporting of wafer butterfly valves from the surrounding flanges makes them less stable in comparison with other types. The wafer butterfly valves cannot be used for the end-of-line service, as wafer valves can not be used as end of line valves since they require the support of pipe flanges on either side to hold the pressure.
Applications : The Wafer type butterfly valves find their usage quite frequently in the water treatment plants, HVAC systems, Chemical Processing.
Design:The lug type of butterfly valves installs with lugged or threaded inserts along the valve body. Those lugs enable the valve to bolt onto a pipe flanges using studs directly.
Advantages: They offer more stability than wafer valves due to bolted connections.It applies to end-of-line service, since lug valves can be installed for end-of-line services with no additional support, with each flange bolting directly into the valve body. As such, removing a whole piping system is unnecessary when maintenance is to be done on it.
Disadvantages: lug valves are more expensive in comparison to wafer types, mainly due to added material for complicated manufacture. The general weight for lug butterfly valves is generally heavier compared to the wafer valve.
Applications: Lug type of butterfly valves is applied to the industrial piping systems that require more secure connections.
Design: The flanges in the flanged butterfly valves are an integral part of the valve body. The flanges have bolt holes that match with the pipe flanges for a direct and reliable connection.
Installation of Flanged Butterfly Valves These kinds of valves are bolted straight to the flanges of mating pipe.
The flanged butterfly valves offer a good connection. The connection is very secure and rigid to the piping system. High pressure applications-high pressure applications are applicable.
Disadvantages: They are the most expensive of three primary connection types. These will also tend to be heavier; therefore installation becomes more troublesome than other variants, especially the bigger sizes.
Applications: The flange types are normally used in high-pressure and critical applications in oil and gas pipelines, water, wastewater treatment, power plants, or in applications that require high strength and reliability in connections.
Design: The U-flange butterfly valves consist of a U-shaped flange design that enables their easy installation and connections onto the piping system. The design allows for quick, handy mounting of this valve onto a pipeline.
Advantages: U-shaped, facilitating installations in pipelines. Being flexible due to their capability to fit various applications within the industry, they are reliable at the connections.
Disadvantages: In regard to other three, U-Flange Butterfly Valves seem to be the least used.
